‘Tic Toons – ‘The Proud, Proud Celts’ 1892

'Tic Toons - 'The Proud, Proud Celts' 1892

This cartoon commerates the club’s breakthrough success of 1892 when the team, in just its fourth season, won the Scottish Cup, the Glasgow Cup and the Glasgow Charity Cup. Referred to as the ‘shamrock success’, this cup treble demonstrated that Celtic had arrived – and paved the way for the club’s first title the following season.

Key players at the time, represented in the cartoon, included Dan Doyle, James Kelly, Sandy McMahon, Johnny Madden and Willie Maley.

The Celtic team of 1922 contained some truly famous names: Patsy Gallacher, The Mighty Atom; Charlie Shaw, statistically the best Celtic goalkeeper ever; the McStay brothers (great-uncles to the later McStay brothers who donned the Hoops); Trooper Joe Cassidy; Jean McFarlane; Andy McAtee from Croy and The Icicle himself, Alec McNair, one of Celtic’s longest-serving players.

Some excellent colour caricatures of one of Celtic’s famous elevens.

And look out for the great image of the Celtic supporters of the early ’20s celebrating in the bottom corner!

A favourite of the Celtic support throughout the late 1940s and 1950s, Bobby Evans was a classy defender once referred to as “a team in himself.” Flame-haired and expertly coiffured, Bobby was always well turned out.

One of the most-capped Celts of all time he was the heart of the Celtic team for almost 15 seasons. Famed also for being one of the first players to wear his jersey outside his shorts – he started this as a means of keeping cool during Celtic’s tour of the USA in 1951.

In the Centenary documentary of the club’s history produced in 1988 comedian Billy Connolly recalled how one fan standing at the back of the Jungle enclosure in the 1950s would simply bellow out Bobby Evans name in tribute over and over again.

‘Tic Toons – Dan Doyle 1894

'Tic Toons - Dan Doyle 1894

The club was only a few years old when this cartoon appeared. Celtic had just won the league title for the second time. The Hoops hadn’t yet been invented and the players wore green and white stripes at the time. But note the hooped socks!

It is definitely defensive die-hard Dan Doyle with his distinctive curly hair on the reverse but it’s not clear who the dandy is on the front. Sandy McMahon?

A great memento of the game from well over a century ago. ‘What a clinker!’ indeed
