Song and verse have been used throughout the club’s history to celebrate the great players, the unforgettable games and moments, the battles won and enemies defeated. Poems, rhymes and chants bring The Celtic Story to life, charting the club’s progress from its foundation in 1887 to support Glasgow’s Irish Catholic community through to being declared Champions of Europe in 1967 and on to becoming beyond doubt Scotland’s most successful football club today.
These verses capture the legendary humour of the Celtic support driven by its core Glaswegian element. It is those fans who have inspired the team to victory down the decades and are the very soul of Celtic Football Club, the keepers of the flame, faithful through and through. They venerate the club’s heroes, maintain the club’s identity and founding principles while mocking afflicted bluenoses and their brethren who try and stand in the way of Celtic’s success. Back in the day as well as songs being taken up on the terraces, verses about players and events would often be published in newspapers from both fans and journalists to add to the various club legends.
