This Saturday sees the Celtic Graves Society mark the resting place of one of Celtic’s early promising stars who died at the tragically young age of only 24.
Regarded by his former team-mate Willie Maley as one of the most versatile Celts in the club’s history, Johnstone-born Peter Dowds was a member of the first Celtic team to win the Scottish Cup in 1892. After two years playing in England for Aston Villa and Stoke, he was persuaded back to Celtic Park – but was struck down by the deadly condition tuberculosis.
He lies in an unmarked grave in the Abbey Cemetery, Elderslie. This will be remedied on Thursday – all supporters welcome.
